12 Days of Christmas (Carols): Day 1 "Hark the Herald Angels Sing"

Updated: Dec 25, 2022

A mere year into what some have called a conversion (or perhaps better phrased, a fresh new love of God) Charles Wesley (founder of the Methodist church) wrote the words to one of the most epic Christmas carols — Hark the Herald Angels Sing. Rediscovering his own love of Christ and faith, the carol bursts with exuberance and love…

And sublime poetry…revealing sacred truths.

Like the shepherds tending their flock, we too are invited into hearing what the divine messengers are singing: a newborn king, peace on earth, and God and humanity reconciled.

While many Christians articulate that reconciliation happens on the Cross of Christ, other deep Christian wisdom suggests what this carols reveals: reconciliation and healing happens through this heaven born and yet enfleshed Prince of Peace and child of righteousness, our Emmanuel here.

For light and life and healing he brings.

Born that death no longer grips us.

Born to give us all second births and second chances.

Hark the divine messengers sing…listen.

Glory to our newborn King.
